To Junior...#4

Hi my sweet baby.

I’m just going to come right out and say it…

Don’t sweat the small stuff.

The moment you do, you overshadow what could be.

What the “could be” is custom to the time, place, and current moment. But, i promise it’s worth more than the mild or great agony you invite to take it’s place.

I understand this is random like all of my letters, but allow me to give you context.

The other day, mommy broke her favorite wine glass. While i had stopped drinking, i still kept a few of my favorites for mocktails and such. And while i didn’t deliberately break it, i had an attitude prior and was hasty putting away dishes and didn’t show the care i needed to prevent a pan falling over and knocking over the glass.

Your father…bless him, remarks, “damn. That was a nice one.”

NOT. HELPING.

He wanted to comfort me in that moment, and he didn’t mean harm. He was acknowledging and maybe slightly sharing my immediate grief in a very literal manner by pointing out an accurate fact…it indeed was a nice one. Dammit.

After we ate the dinner we made (during the time of me cleaning), I retreated to the bedroom for the rest of the evening and didn’t hang out with your dad. Stewing over…a wine glass.

I woke up the next day grateful for your dad coming to bed at some point. And remembering…

It was a fucking wine glass.

“excuse my French,” as your grandpa would say. But, the sentiment is so very true.

Worse things are happening, happen, and will happen all around us. Everyday. And it’s by sheer luck that we dodge more than half of the tragedies by God’s timing…which sometimes could be a split second.

So why sweat the small stuff? What is considered “small” varies from person to person, but i urge you to have criteria for yourself…and find more gratitude.

Some moments we miss, we won’t get back. Some moments, while they’re not always pretty and packed up with a big, bright bow, are opportunities to savor peace and love, as you never know what the next day will bring.

Don’t sweat the small stuff, my dear. It’s not worth it. Your peace is worth it, the opportunity to love is worth it, and the opportunity to replace that energy-sucking downer with something more fulfilling is most definitely…over 100 times worth it.

A key to maintaining a healthy mental interior and powerful exterior.

I love you.
